Scientific and Expedition Vessel Project 22280

On the 1st December 2008 a state shipbuilding contract was signed for construction of a new scientific and expedition vessel for the Russian Antarctic Expedition between JSC “Admiralty Shipyards” (successor of FSUE “Admiralty Shipyards”) and the Federal Hydrometeorology and Environment Monitoring Service (Rosgidromet).

After construction the vessel will be operated by the “Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute” of Rosgidromet.

The new flagship of the scientific and expedition fleet will replace vessel “Academician Fedorov” and is designed to provide for activities of the Russian Antarctic Expedition:

  • replacement of the personnel of the Antarctic stations,
  • delivery of cargoes for the Antarctic stations with unloading on wild shore and on ice,
  • research activities in the ocean and research of natural processes and phenomena,
  • removal of garbage from the Antarctica.

The vessel is designed by “Baltsudoproect” central design bureau (Branch of CCB named after Academician A. N. Krylov) using multi-year experience of operation of vessels in the Antarctic zone, providing for comfortable operation conditions for the crew and expedition personnel at the ambient temperature of down to minus 40°C.
